Alumni Spotlight: Esther Achunine’s Journey from Social Care to Data Analytics

The path can feel uncertain for many professionals looking to transition into tech. But for Esther Achunine, taking the leap was one of the most rewarding decisions of her career.

Before stepping into the world of data analytics, Esther worked in social care, supporting vulnerable service users. While she found the work meaningful, she yearned for a career that aligned with her interests in technology and data.

"I knew I wanted to make a career change, but I wasn’t sure where to start. I had no prior experience in tech, and the transition seemed daunting," she shares.

Discovering the Niyo Bootcamp

Esther first came across Niyo Bootcamp at a careers fair, where she learned about the program’s focus on equipping women of color with in-demand tech skills. Intrigued, she reached out for more information - and that decision changed everything.

"I saw the bootcamp advertised and decided to enquire. It turned out to be exactly what I needed to make my career pivot a reality," she explains.

The bootcamp gave her the technical and practical skills needed to enter the industry, from mastering data analysis tools to understanding project management methodologies. One of the most valuable aspects, she says, was the opportunity to build a portfolio of projects to showcase to employers.

"Having a portfolio really helped me stand out. I was able to demonstrate the projects I worked on during the bootcamp, which gave me confidence when applying for roles."

Breaking Into Tech

After completing the bootcamp, Esther landed her first tech role as a Data Operations Analyst in digital marketing. But she didn’t stop there. She continued honing her skills and recently secured a new position as a Technical & Operational Analyst at Liberty Specialty Markets.

In her current role, she is responsible for reviewing insurance policy data, liaising with stakeholders, ensuring data compliance, and creating process demos to streamline operations.

"The bootcamp didn’t just give me skills - it gave me a new way of thinking. Now, I approach challenges with confidence, knowing that I have the tools to navigate them."

Her Biggest Win?

For Esther, the most rewarding part of her journey has been successfully transitioning into tech without having to self-fund her learning.

"Breaking into tech can be expensive, but Niyo gave me access to top-tier training without the financial burden. That was a game-changer for me."

Advice for Women Looking to Pivot into Tech

When asked what advice she would give to other women considering a tech career, Esther is clear:

"If you’re thinking about switching careers, just go for it. The tech industry needs more diverse voices, and Niyo offers the best resources to help you develop the skills you need. It won’t always be easy, but the effort is worth it!"

What’s Next?

Outside of work, Esther is a passionate traveler with an ambitious goal:

"I want to visit 30 countries before I turn 30!" 🌍✈️

Her journey is a powerful reminder that with the right skills, support, and determination, making a career pivot is possible. Esther’s story is just one of many proving that tech is for everyone, especially women ready to break barriers.
